October 20, 2025

As both an author who writes about kids with Cerebral Palsy, a woman with Cerebral Palsy, myself, and an advocate for kids with any disabilities, I feel that I know what I talk about how kids with disabilities want to be treated.

Parenting a child with a disability brings unique challenges, but it also opens the door to incredible moments of strength, creativity, and joy. I want to share a few tips that I’ve came with,

I hope you find them helpful encourage, uplift, and that they'll remind you that you’re not alone on this path.

My 10 Tips:

1. Celebrate strengths, not just milestones – Focus on what your child can do, not just what’s challenging. Every achievement matters.

2. Build routines, but stay flexible – Predictability helps kids feel secure, but being flexible allows you to adapt to unexpected needs.

3. Advocate early and often – Don’t be afraid to speak up for your child in school, healthcare, or community settings. You know their needs best.

4. Encourage independence – Let your child try new things, even if it takes longer or looks different. Small steps build confidence.

5. Use adaptive tools and resources – From mobility aids to communication apps, the right tools can open up new opportunities for your child.

6. Practice patience—with yourself too – Parenting is hard work. Remember, you’re learning alongside your child. Give yourself grace.

7. Connect with other families – Join support groups or online communities where you can share stories, advice, and encouragement.

8. Work with your child’s teachers – Collaborate regularly with educators to make sure your child has the support they need in the classroom.

9. Prioritize play and fun – Laughter, games, and creativity are just as important as therapy sessions. Kids learn best when they’re enjoying themselves.

10. Take care of yourself – Rest, recharge, and nurture your own wellbeing. A rested parent can better support your child.
